Welcome to the Department of Sport Management
OUR MISSION
The Mission of the Department of Sport Management is to prepare effective managerial practitioners in sport-related industries and to foster ethical leaders and professionals with specialized knowledge, skills, and abilities to serve the global community.
OUR CURRICULUM
The Sport Management curriculum is designed to provide students with content knowledge prescribed by the Commission on Sport Management, hands-on experiences on and off campus, and other professional development opportunities, such as planning, implementing, or attending our Annual Sport Leadership Conference.
The Department also offers the following Minors:
Coaching Management
The Coaching Management minor can be used by students who have enrolled in the Sport Management program or other concentrations/majors. It is designed to strengthen students’ knowledge and skills in athletic coaching and empower them to succeed in the athletic workforce.
Recreation Management
The Recreation Management minor can be used by students enrolled in Sport Management or other concentrations/majors. It is designed to strengthen specified knowledge and skills in recreation to empower students’ capability in the workforce of intramural sports, recreation facilities, government agencies, and private (e.g., YMCA) recreational organizations.
Sport Entrepreneur Management
The Department of Sport Management offers a comprehensive minor designed to enhance the knowledge base of Sport Management majors across various domains. The Sport Entrepreneurial Management minor aims to provide students with a unique perspective on the sport industry, emphasizing entrepreneurial activities and innovative approaches. The ability to conduct thorough analysis and evaluation of entrepreneurial-related activities within the sport industry
This program is structured to equip students with the theoretical foundation and practical skills necessary to navigate the complex landscape of sport entrepreneurship. By integrating core business concepts with sport-specific knowledge, graduates will be well-positioned to identify opportunities, mitigate risks, and drive innovation in this dynamic field.
Sport Management Organization
The Sport Management Organization is the student organization within the Department of Sport Management. All Sport Management majors are eligible for the membership. The organization elects its own officers, updates its bylaws, and determines its goals and objectives. The majors’ organization activities are both professional- and service-oriented. Majors are encouraged to attend regional or national conventions under the supervision of the organization’s faculty advisor. The organization hosts an annual leadership conference at DSU’s campus and invites their members to attend the Sport Management National Conference yearly.
Sport Administration, MSA
The Master of Science in Sport Administration program offered by the Department of Sport Management professionally prepares ethical leaders for advanced responsibilities within sport organizations and/or to design and implement new sport or sport-related enterprises. This is a 30 credit hour, twelve-month program designed to develop your ability to lead and manage sport and/or sport-related organizations while adapting to changing economic, legal, political, and social influences.
These are some of the unique features of this program: (1) the program adheres to the standards set forth by the Commission for Sport Management Accreditation; (2) the courses are designed to incorporate extensive problem-based field experiences in the sport industry, (3) courses can be taken fully Online or in the classroom; (4) students can complete the program in 9 months or up to 3 years.
